It all started with the book «Riley Unlikely» by Riley Banks-Snyder. While visiting a school in Kenya, she saw with her own eyes how an entire class had to share a single pencil stub. She could not forget that experience, and, on her next visit to Kenya, she brought a large amount of school supplies with her. Her efforts grew and developed increasingly, until she finally founded her own organization.
While reading the book, I became very concerned about this situation. My brothers Lias, Lean and I are homeschooled. We began discussing it together with our teacher Raphaela in class. We wondered what the situation was in the Malagasy schools. Do the students also share pencils? How could we help as a class? Do we realize how lucky we are to have enough school supplies? One thing was clear; we wanted to help!
This is how it came about that we carried out a sponsored run in Madagascar. With the proceeds we bought the necessary school materials for a school with 150 children, aged five to twelve. The children are taught in two small classrooms. Due to a lack of space and teachers, the classes are divided into morning and afternoon sessions. A missionary has been working in this village for years. He informed us that the school needed support.
Flying the supplies to the remote village by helicopter was an unforgettable experience. Upon arrival, many villagers gathered to help us carry the supplies to the school. In front of the assembled schoolchildren, we handed the supplies over to the teachers. Afterwards, the children performed dances and sang songs. We brought a few games to play with the kids. We played soccer, and they enjoyed blowing bubbles. We also painted hearts on their arms with face paint. The parachute game was particularly popular.
