Christmas celebrated in a different way

Christmas is celebrated very differently around the world. Be it with a Christmas tree richly decorated with many baubles and lots of presents or with a good meal and fellowship. In the central mountain regions of Papua, Indonesia, Christmas and other special festivities are celebrated with a bakar batu.

Pork, sweet potatoes and vegetables, which make up a real bakar batu, are among the staple foods in this region. A bakar batu is a joint effort in which young and old help out.

The pieces of wild boar are first cooked under previously heated stones. A large hole in the ground also serves as a cooking area. Large leaves, hot stones, meat, grass, sweet potatoes, vegetables and other leaves are layered alternately in the hole and finally covered again with a layer of hot stones and cooked for hours.

Then everyone sits around a pile of meat and vegetables and enjoys the feast. Bon appétit!
