The Wamena base lies on the island of Papua's high plateau. The work in this area grew out of the assistance given after the great drought of 1998 and the subsequent famine. The base has been in operation since April, 1998.
In Europe, Papua is an unknown world. The traditional clothing of the natives is their dark skin, in spite of the extreme cold which can dominate this high region. (2-3000 m a.s.l.). Flights loaded with supplies for those in need are a matter of life and death.
